Comparison Nutritionist Q&A

CONSIDERING SWITCHING FROM PLATINUM TO HORSE GUARD PRODUCTS
Customer: “I’ve fed Platinum Performance for years. I’d like to know some comparative info about your products.”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: In all our vitamin-mineral supplement products what really sets our products apart from others is that they contain 3mg of organic selenium. I did extensive research on selenium for my doctorate, and many studies in the last ten years have found that 3mg of Se vs 1mg of Se aids in higher immune response, and reduces oxidative stress. Our basic product, Horse Guard, contains 3 mg of selenium, 4.5 mg biotin, along with a complete vitamin-mineral supplement, and prebiotics and probiotics in a 2 oz dose. . We also have great hoof supplements: Hoof Guard contains 32 mg of biotin, 400 mg of zinc, 5,000 mg of methionine, and 5,000 mg of MSM, while Biotin Hoof Blast contains 100 mg of biotin, and same amounts of zinc, methionine, and MSM. Our product designed for performance horses, Trifecta, has a full dose of Horse Guard, has full dose of Hoof Guard, higher levels of prebiotics and probiotics, and a joint supplement that contains 5,000 mg of glucosamine, 5,000 mg of MSM, and 100 mg Hyaluronic Acid in an 8 oz dose.
REPLACING SMART DIGEST, BIOTIN AND MARE MAGIC WITH HORSE GUARD PRODUCTS
Customer: “I’m interested in replacing most or all of my supplements and/or grain for my horse with those from your company. She currently is taking SmartDigest Ultra, Horse Guard, Biotin, and Mare Magic. Could you please let me know what products you carry which are compatible to the above products? I would like to buy locally from now on.”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: You have a couple of different options. You could replace the SmartDigest Ultra, Horse Guard, and Biotin with Mega-Dose for ease in feeding. In a 4 ounce dose, you get a full dose of Horse Guard, 32 mg of biotin, and a complete digestive supplement. If you are looking for more of a grain, to replace all these supplements you would want to feed Simplete High Performance. It is fed in a 2 lb feeding, and it would also provide joint support for your horse. Both are great options, just depends on what you prefer to feed. With either option, you can add the Mare Magic.
FEEDING HORSE GUARD WITH SMARTDIGEST ULTRA
Customer: “I am giving my 13 yr old mare, Horse Guard and SmartDigest Ultra (pellet form). Since both supplements contain probiotics and prebiotics, is it safe to continue to use both products or should I only use Horse Guard? Thanks”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: It is perfectly safe to feed both products together, as you don’t have to worry about any vitamin and/or mineral toxicities. Extra probiotics and prebiotics are fine to feed to help out your mare’s digestive system. However, we suggest feeding Mega Dose to receive as much prebiotic and probiotics and your Horse Guard all in one well-balanced product.
PRODUCT TO REPLACE OMEGA HORSESHINE
Customer: “I currently feed omega horseshine to our horses but was wondering if you had a horse guard product that was comparable. Thanks.”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: I would recommend Simplete. In 2 pounds a day it will not only provide the omega 3’s from flaxseed oil, but it will also provide them with a complete vitamin/mineral. It is an absolutely amazing product that we feed all 15 of our horses.
IS THERE ENOUGH SELENIUM IN TRIFECTA, THERE IS NOT IN MY PLATINUM PERFORMANCE FOR MY AREA
Customer: “Is there enough Selenium in Trifecta for horses in a Selenium deficient areas? I am feeding Platinum Performance now and even though there is Selenium in that supplement, it is not enough for this area in Northeastern California.”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Yes, 8 ounces of Trifecta contains 3 mg of 100% organic selenium, which are adequate amounts of selenium to horses in extremely deficient areas. I think that you will be extremely satisfied with Trifecta to only provide your horse with adequate selenium levels, but also provide hoof, joint, and gut support.
PLATINUM CJ, HORSE GUARD OR TRIFECTA: WHICH FEED IS RIGHT FOR MY HORSE?
Customer: “My friend highly recommends your Horse Guard product with pre- and probiotics. My 24-YO mare is an easy keeper. I recently moved her to western South Dakota where she shares a pasture with 7 horses that will soon be supplemented with alfalfa-grass hay. She has significant arthritis in her hocks, for which Colo State univ’s vet lab suggested that I supplement her with Platinum Performance CJ. Would your product(s) be something I would give my horse in addition to the CJ?”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Thank you for the question. I would not recommend adding Horse Guard to the Platinum Performance CJ because they both contain a vitamin/mineral supplement. However, you have a couple of options. After you finish the bucket of Platinum I would recommend you switch to our product, Trifecta. Trifecta has a daily dose of our vitamin/mineral supplement, Horse Guard, in addition to three other supplements. It has a powerful gut support with prebiotics, probiotics, and live yeast cultures, a complete hoof and hair supplement (32 mg of biotin, zinc, methionine, and MSM), and a powerful joint supplement (5000 mg glucosamine, 5000 mg MSM, and 100 mg hyaluronic acid) which would address the arthritis in your mare’s hocks like the Platinum. If you are satisfied with the Platinum product, but would like to add gut support to your horse’s feed regime I would recommend feeding Gut Guard along with your Platinum product.
AMPLIFY VS SUPER WEIGHT GAIN
Customer: "How does your product compare to amplify? "
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Thank you for the question. Super Weight Gain contains the cool energy like amplify but also has a complete vitamin-mineral supplement and gut supplement to help the horse in three ways to help them reach an optimal weight. One of these factors may be the issue your horse has lost weight or is not retaining weight as a balanced healthy horse should.
SWITCHING FROM SMARTPAK TO HORSE GUARD
Customer: “We currently have a 9- and 10- year old TWH who receive SmartCombo Ultra Pellets daily and are considering switching to HorseGuard. Is HorseGaurd itself sufficient as a replacement to provide required probiotics, supplements, digestive, hoof and hair health and thriving please? We also have a 29-year-old Peruvian Paso (no longer ridden). He’s receiving SmartPak Glucosamine – do you have a viable product we could obtain for him to replace and perhaps improve upon the Smartpak? Thank you!”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: I would recommend switching your two TWH to Trifecta. Trifecta contains a full dose of Horse Guard to ensure all their vitamin and mineral needs are met, along with three other supplements in an 8 oz dose (for a 1000 lb horse). Trifecta contain a vitamin/mineral supplement, gut support (prebiotics, probiotics, and live yeast cultures), hoof and hair supplement (32 mg of biotin, zinc, methionine, and MSM), and a powerful joint supplement (5000 mg glucosamine, 5000 mg MSM, and 100 mg Hyaluronic acid). For your Peruvian Paso, I would recommend one of two products. First, I would recommend the Trifecta as well. As horses age, they need help to stay healthy overall. Not only would Trifecta provide joint support for him, but the vitamin/mineral pack, hoof and hair supplement, and gut support would help to ensure that all his needs are being met and help to get the most out of the feed he is consuming to keep him happy and healthy. However, if you only want to supplement for his joints we have a very good joint supplement, called Joint Guard which is fed at 4 oz a day (6600 mg glucosamine, 6600 mg MSM, 1000 mg chondroitin, an 100 mg Hyaluronic acid). We have 15 head of performance horses ourselves that range in age from weanlings to 23-year-old broodmares, as well as horses that compete across the country year-round (get haul 50,000+ miles a year). All of our horses are fed Trifecta and we truly believe that it keeps them in the best overall health they can be.
MANNA PRO FLAX SNAX VS FLIX
Customer: "Hi, I have been feeding Manna Pro Flax Snacks but just ran across Flix treats? I love flax, but would like to know how the 2 compare?"
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Thanks for the question. Our Flix treats are 100% Flaxseed, and the only ingredient is flaxseed giving your horse the benefits of Omega 3s, which promote shiny coats and help alleviate stiff joints. Flax is full of antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties, and since there is no sugar added, you don’t have to feel guilty about feeding them. Flax treats by Manna Pro list the following ingredients Wheat, ground flaxseed, stabilized rice bran, oat groats, brown sugar, cassava root, brewer's dried yeast, cinnamon, salt, vegetable oil, citric acid, mixed tocopherols, and rosemary. If you are looking for a treat with the most amount of Flax, Flix Treats seem like a better option.
COOL CALORIES OR SUPER WEIGHT GAIN?
Customer: " I feed cool calories now and have been for a month, I haven't seen the results I want. My friend just suggested Super Weight Gain, can you tell me the difference?"
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Hello, Yes, I am familiar with Cool Calories. When we compare Super Weight Gain with Cool Calories, Super Weight Gain is like feeding Horse Guard, Cool Calories, and a gut supplement in one dose. Cool Calories is a fat supplement and does not offer the other benefits, such a vitamin mineral and gut supplement. Therefor it does not cover as many bases for your horse, and one of those bases may be the deficiency that is causing the weight loss in the first place.
