Fly Girl Joins the Horse Guard Herd

On Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, a bay filly was born here at Horse Guard. To honor all our U.S. service men and women, we decided to name her "Fly Girl" after the women pilots in WWII. We are very excited about this flashy filly's future, as her parents and grandparents have excelled in the rodeo arena.

Fly Girl's mother, Docs Red Rita, was an outstanding competitor and is an amazing producer. Rita has been part of the Horse Guard family since she was three years old. Now at 23 years old, Rita just enjoys raising babies. However, she was very successful in the arena herself. Rita has won many championships in High School, College, and amateur levels. In High School I competed on her in three events; breakaway roping, goat tying, and pole bending. She allowed me to qualify for the National High School Finals Rodeo in all three events. She also earned three West Coast Breakaway roping championships and qualified to the National College Finals Rodeo all four years.

After college, she was put into a well-deserved retirement. She then started produced foals for us in hopes of having babies as amazing as her. Her offspring as well have gone onto be both great stars in the barrel racing and roping arena. Fly Girl is Rita's, sixth baby. Fly Girl's sire is a young stallion named Cowboy Cardoza (aka Hippie) from Russel and Sammy Jo Cardoza in Terrebonne, OR. He is a grandson of Frenchmans Guy and out of Russel's great heeling mare, Spratts Bay Zan, who has been hauled to rodeos all across America and been roped off of at the NFR. At only 6 years old, Hippie is showing great potential and has been placing at AQHA shows and big ropings. His first foals are being started this year. They seem to be very willing and are extremely smart.

With the great breeding that Fly Girl has, she is bound to be a champion. This strong, athletic filly is very spunky. She has big shoes to fill. Sure looks like she could be a champion someday.
